A Palm Beach Accident Injury Attorney’s Florida Motor Scooter Safety Tips

Gas prices have passed $4 a gallon, and many Florida drivers are looking for alternatives to driving. Motor scooters such as those made by Vespa and Vento are becoming increasingly popular, as they can travel more than 85 miles on a gallon of gas.

However, as more people choose to ride motor scooters, safety has become a concern. In Florida, the rules for riding a motor scooter depend on the size of the engine. If the engine has a displacement of 50 cubic centimeters or less, the rider must have a valid driver's license, but requires no additional training. Engines with a displacement greater than 50 cm3 are subject to the same rules as motorcycles, and operators of these vehicles must have a Florida motorcycle license.

Palm Beach accident injury attorney David Glatthorn has compiled these safety tips for Florida motor scooter riders:

  1. Always wear a helmet: During a Florida scooter accident, riders often fly off the scooter and hit the pavement. A helmet offers the best protection from head injuries.
  2. Be seen: Wear bright or reflective clothing.
  3. Use your lights: Many Florida scooter crashes occur when the driver of a larger vehicle does not see the scooter. Lights can increase your visibility to other vehicles, even during the day.
  4. Use your turn signals: Other drivers on the road need to know what you plan to do. When you turn or change lanes, use both your signal light and the appropriate hand turn signal.
  5. Follow the rules of the road: Motor scooters are subject to the same rules of the road as cars and trucks. Make sure that you follow all traffic laws and obey all signals. Always drive within the speed limit and never travel faster than is appropriate for road conditions. Slow down if the road surface is bumpy or wet.
  6. Never try to share the lane with another vehicle: Don't try to make a right turn by pulling up next to a vehicle on the shoulder, unless there is a separate lane. Pulling up along the side of a car can put you in the driver's blind spot.
  7. Be extra careful at intersections, parking lot entrances and exits, and driveways: Florida scooter crashes are more likely to occur in these locations.
  8. Watch for traffic behind you: Check your mirrors frequently and change lanes if a driver is following too closely.
  9. Know your blind spots: Check these regularly.
