What To Do If You’re Injured In A Limo Accident In West Palm Beach
When a limousine company is hired for a special event in West Palm Beach, the lives of passengers are placed into the hands of its operators and drivers.
Limousine accidents don’t happen often, but when they do, the impact can be devastating to passengers and others.
Operator Negligence – A Primary Factor In Limo Accidents
A limousine accident that occurred in Upstate New York, the deadliest since 2005, drew national attention. A total of 20 people died in the crash after the vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into a parked SUV. This included two pedestrians, 17 limo passengers, and the driver.
During an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), two factors were found to have caused the accident:
- The limo company, Prestige Limousine, had a history of failed vehicle inspections. In recent years, four vehicles were taken out of service because they weren’t suitable to drive. Additionally, the limo driver’s wife claimed that her husband had complained about the condition of the company’s vehicles on many occasions. The vehicle involved in the deadly accident had failed inspection a month earlier.
- The intersection itself may have been difficult for the driver to navigate. Locals have complained about the intersection for years, and after a fatal accident in 2008, it was reconstructed. But since then, that intersection has had four accidents, state officials said.
Further investigation into Prestige Limousine’s operator found that he knowingly hired a driver who didn’t possess the proper license to operate a limousine. The operator was arrested and faces charges of criminally negligent homicide.
Injured In A Limo Accident? We Can Help
Limo accidents may not seem very prevalent. In fact, according to the NHTSA, a total of 12 deaths from 2012 to 2016 were due to limousine accidents.
But when a limousine accident does occur, it’s important that you file a claim as soon as possible. An experienced West Palm Beach auto accident attorney can look for clues pointing to negligence on the part of either the driver, the company operator, or the driver of another vehicle.
A limousine company operator may have violated federal guidelines by failing to ensure that vehicles are up to code. Perhaps a passenger vehicle was retrofitted or stretched without including safety features or meeting federal standards. A driver may have been inexperienced, distracted or impaired.
