Does Drug Testing Work? Florida Truckers Cheat On Drug Tests.

Federal law requires mandatory random drug testing of all commercial truck drivers. But, a recent study has found that it is easy for truck drivers to cheat on these tests.

Undercover federal investigators from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) posed as truck drivers and visited 24 drug testing sites. The investigators tried to cheat on the drug tests by diluting specimens and using drug-masking products. The results of this study are disturbing.

The GAO team found that 75 percent of the testing facilities did not restrict access to items that could be used to dilute urine specimens. Truck drivers could easily alter specimens using running water, soap, or air freshener.

The GAO investigators bought drug-masking products over the internet. Team members were able to mix these products with real specimens at the drug-testing sites without being caught. In addition, the drug-masking products went undetected by the labs.

Although most Florida trucking accidents are caused by driver error, West Palm Beach 18-wheeler attorney David Glatthorn knows of many cases where drugged truck drivers have caused devastating crashes. In fact, drug use is a factor in one-quarter of all Florida 18-wheeler crashes. It is the trucking company’s responsibility to screen drivers for drugs and alcohol.

If you or a loved one is a victim of a Florida commercial truck accident caused by an impaired driver, you may have to fight the trucking companies to get the compensation you deserve.
