My child was injured in a Boca Raton car crash. What should I do?

A:

Car accidents are the leading cause of traumatic injury and accidental death among children in the United States. Every year, more than 2,000 children die in car accidents. About 250,000 are injured.

If your child is injured in a Boca Raton car crash, your immediate priority is to get medical care for your child. Take your child to the emergency room, and make an appointment to follow up with your own pediatrician. It is important that you make the follow-up visit. Even though emergency room doctors are highly trained, they may miss signs of serious injury in children if they are used to primarily treating adults. Your pediatrician will be able to screen your child for potentially serious hidden injuries.

After your child has been seen by a doctor and is out of any immediate danger, you will want to start documenting your child’s injuries. Take pictures of any visible wounds. Keep a diary and include notes about doctor visits, medications, any follow-up appointments, your child’s pain, and how the injuries affect your child’s activities.

The insurance adjustor may ask to speak to your child. This is not a reasonable request. Boca Raton injury lawyer David Glatthorn advises that parents never let a child talk to the insurance company. If the adjustor asks to speak to your child, refer him to your Florida accident attorney
