My son just got his license. I just got an insurance quote. Insurance for my son will be expensive. How much auto insurance does a teen driver need in Florida?

A:

In the state of Florida, all drivers must carry minimum liability coverage of $10,000 for bodily injury for one person and $20,000 for bodily injury to two or more people, as well as $10,000 property damage liability. However, the costs of a West Palm Beach car crash can add up quickly. In many cases, a $20,000 per crash limit is not enough. Palm Beach auto accident attorney David Glatthorn recommends liability limits of at least $250,000 per person, $500,000 per accident and $100,000 for property damage.

Unfortunately, insurance for teen drivers is expensive. Drivers under age 24 account for almost one-third of the cost of all motor vehicle injuries. Because the risk of a West Palm Beach car accident is significantly higher during a teen’s first year of driving, your annual insurance rate will increase by $1,200 to $4,900 a year. However there are ways to save money. Learn more in our library article, “A Palm Beach Auto Accident Attorney’s 10 Tips For Saving Money on Your Teen’s Auto Insurance.”

Remember, if your son doesn’t carry insurance, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will suspend his driving privileges and charge a fee of up to $500. If he drives your vehicle without insurance coverage, your insurance company may penalize you.
