Why are car insurance rates in Florida so high for teenagers?

A:

Getting a driver’s license is a big deal. For many teens, a license represents freedom, independence or another step towards adulthood. However, the unanticipated costs of driving can come as a shock. Not only is gas almost $4.00 a gallon, but auto insurance rates run from $1,500 to $5,000 a year.

Insurance rates for teen drivers are high because drivers ages 16 to 19 are four times more likely than older drivers to be involved in a West Palm Beach auto accident. Each year, about 3,000 teens are killed and more than 350,000 are seriously injured in U.S. car crashes.

Because of the high cost of auto insurance, many teens are tempted to drive without it. This is not a good idea. If you are caught driving without insurance, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will suspend your driving privileges and charge you up to $500 in fees. You may also be held personally liable if you do cause a Florida car crash.

However, there are ways for teens to save money on auto insurance. Palm Beach car crash lawyer David Glatthorn has written an article, “A Palm Beach Auto Accident Attorney’s 10 Tips For Saving Money on Your Teen’s Auto Insurance.”
