Four Medical Tests You May Need After A West Palm Beach Car Accident

If you were injured in a West Palm Beach car accident, the doctors in the emergency room may order medical tests to screen for hidden injuries. The most common medical tests include: MRI, X-ray, EMG/NCS, and CT Scans.

  1. MRI – Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, uses a magnetic field and radio energy to create pictures of internal organs. MRIs are used to screen for damaged or injured discs in the neck or lower back, and to search for ligament or tendon damage in the back, knees, ankles, shoulders, or wrists. An MRI may also be used to diagnose a closed head injury.
  2. X‑rays – X-rays use radiation to produce images of fractured bones. Since X-rays can only visualize bones, they are often used with MRIs in order to identify associated damage in soft tissue.
  3. EMG/NCS – An electromyogram (EMG) or nerve conduction study (NCS) is a diagnostic test for nerve injury. The tests are usually performed on the arms and the legs and measure how fast the nerves can receive and send signals. If the signal is slowed or delayed, there may be damage to the spinal cord or to the peripheral nervous system. Nerve tests are very important in diagnosing serious nerve injuries following a West Palm Beach car accident.
  4. CT scan (CAT scan) – Doctors often order a CT scan if they suspect a head injury. A computed tomography scan uses x-rays to make a detailed image of the brain, including both the skull and the soft tissue. A CT scan can identify bleeding in the brain that can lead to swelling and brain damage.
