Palm Beach Accident Attorney Says “Buckle Up!” It’s Good Advice for You and Your Pet.

Many of us consider our pets to be members of the family. We spend time with our pets, play, and travel with pets. But, like all members of our family, pets should be buckled up while traveling.

Most parents would not let a young child ride in the car without a car seat. Pets need the same consideration. In a 50 mph Florida car crash, an unrestrained 10-pound puppy can exert up to 500 pounds of pressure. This can cause serious injury to the pet and anyone else who happens to be in his way.

Despite the danger, a survey by AAA found that 84 percent of dog owners allowed their pet to ride unrestrained. Not only were the dogs allowed to move about the car, they were also allowed to distract the driver. Sixty-five percent of the drivers surveyed admitted to playing with their dogs while driving. Some even allowed their dogs to ride on their laps.

Admittedly, getting a dog into a pet restraint can be difficult. David Glatthorn, a car accident attorney in Palm Beach County offers these tips for safe and hassle free traveling with pets.

  1. Talk to your veterinarian about the best restraint for your pet. Options include harnesses, car seats and pet carriers.
  2. If you use a pet carrier, make sure it is well ventilated and large enough that your pet can stand, sit, lie down and turn around. Consider including a favorite toy or blanket.
  3. Let your pet get used to the restraint at home before trying it in the car.
  4. Try short drives first and gradually build up to longer trips.
  5. Make sure the crate is secured so it doesn’t slide or go flying in the event of quick stop or crash.
  6. Feed your pet before the drive. If your pet needs to eat during the drive, take a rest stop and let your pet eat and get some exercise. Never feed your pet in the car.
  7. Never leave your pet alone in a parked car. Cars heat up quickly and your pet can develop heatstroke within minutes.
  8. Never let your pet ride with his head out the window.
