On January 8, 2011, Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford was shot in the head while meeting with constituents outside a suburban grocery store. Ms. Gifford survived the shooting and brought public attention to traumatic brain injuries.
Each year, two million Americans suffer a brain injury. Three hundred thousand of these injuries require emergency treatment and hospitalization. About 100,000 victims will suffer ongoing consequences that will affect their ability to work and live their lives.
More than one quarter of traumatic brain injuries are caused by car accidents. Less than ten percent are caused by violence. Regardless of the cause, for victims of serious traumatic brain injury, the road to recovery is long and hard.
Immediately after her injury, Ms. Gifford was put into a coma to allow her brain time to heal. She was gradually taken off medication and allowed to breathe on her own. Once stable, she was moved to a rehabilitation facility where she received physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. By April she was able to read, understand, and speak in short sentences. On June 15, nearly six months later, Gifford returned home, but continued to undergo therapy and rehabilitation.
Since returning home, Ms. Gifford has testified before Congress, presented her husband with the Distinguished Flying Cross medal, and led the Pledge of Allegiance at the Democratic National Convention. Gabrielle Gifford has made a remarkable and unexpected recovery, yet the woman who led the pledge was not the same Gabrielle Gifford that existed before the shooting. She still struggles with speech and mobility and has lost fifty percent of her vision in each eye.
