Imagine that you’re in a Boca Raton car crash. Your injuries seem to be minor and you think that your next steps are to check on the other drivers, exchange information, and take pictures to document the scene. These are important steps, but you should be aware that the accident danger isn’t over. All too often, Florida accident victims survive a car crash only to be hit by someone passing by. Before you get out of your car, ask yourself this, “What should I do to keep myself safe until help arrives?”
The answer depends on the situation.
If you are in a minor accident and have no injuries, you should move your car to the shoulder of the road or a nearby parking lot before getting out. If you park on the shoulder, choose a location that is visible from a distance. Exit on the side away from traffic and stay on that side and as far from traffic as possible. Don’t stay too close to your vehicle, just in case there is a fire or explosion. If you have flares, set them behind your vehicle and then get out of the way till help arrives.
If you or a passenger is seriously injured, or if your car can’t be driven, you may have to leave your car where it is. Leave your seatbelt on until you can exit safely. Turn on all the lights and call 911 for help. Let the dispatcher know that you are blocking traffic. Try to stay calm. If you must leave the vehicle, use the safest possible exit and move quickly.
