How to check your tire pressure

1. Buy a digital tire gauge. It will cost about $10. Keep it in the glove compartment.
2. Determine the proper tire pressure for your car. This is in the owner’s manual and on the yellow sticker on the doorjamb on the driver side. There may be different pressures for front and rear tires.
3. Don’t check the pressure immediately after driving. Tires heat up while driving and you want to check tire pressure when the tires are cold. Give your tires at least half an hour to cool down.
4. Unscrew the valve cap on your tire and place it in your pocket, so you won’t lose it.
5. Press the tire gauge onto the valve stem. You may hear a slight hiss. A few seconds is all it takes to get an accurate reading.
6. Read the tire pressure and compare it to the recommended pressure for your car. If it is low, you will need to put air in your tires.
7. Replace the valve cap.

Now you can compare the tire pressure readings you got with the specified amount called for by the manufacturer (on the doorjamb or in the manual). If the level of pressure in your tires is below the specified amount, you need to fill the tires with air. If you don’t have an air compressor, you can do this at a gas station.
