Police officers have dangerous jobs. While shootings accounted for the largest number of police officer deaths in 2011, the National Law enforcement Officer’s Memorial Fund listed vehicle accidents as a close second and as the leading cause of death in 13 of the last 14 years. The recent death of Jupiter Police Officer Bruce St. Laurent illustrates just how dangerous even routine work like directing traffic can be.
At 4:40 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, 2012, fifty-five-year-old St. Laurent was struck by a pick-up truck while directing traffic during a presidential motorcade. He was on his motorcycle, preparing to shut down a section of I-95, when he was struck by a pickup truck driven by 56-year-old Susan Holloway. St. Laurent was thrown from his motorcycle and caught underneath Holloway's truck. He died from his injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol recently finished its preliminary investigation of the West Palm Beach motorcycle crash. According to the preliminary crash report Holloway was not speeding, drunk, using drugs, or distracted at the time of the crash. St. Laurent moved directly in front of Holloway’s truck with his lights flashing. Although Holloway slammed on her brakes immediately, she could not avoid the crash.
Although the Florida Highway Patrol does not believe Holloway is responsible for the accident, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is conducting a separate homicide investigation and charges against Ms. Holloway are still possible.
West Palm Beach accident attorney David Glatthorn would like to offer his condolences to the family of Officer Bruce St. Laurent. Those who wish to help Officer St. Laurent’s family can do so through the Law Enforcement Assistance Foundation website..
